A Mother and Son’s First Symphony Experience

Houston Symphony’s “Oh What Fun!” Holiday Concert for Kids

Exposing children to different styles of music

Music has always been a meaningful part of my life. It fuels workouts, calms anxious moments, and, at its best, creates connection. Different styles move me in different ways, and for a long time, introducing my son to the symphony had been sitting quietly on my “one day” parenting list This December, we finally made it happen and it felt like Christmas came early.

For the first time, my son and I experienced the power of nearly 100 musicians on stage, creating holiday magic together. I hope one day to invest the time and discipline required to become a talented musician myself, and I hope my son grows to love exploring new forms of music. But for now, there is one thing I can do as a parent: plant the seed of exposure. And when nurtured, seeds tend to grow.

When trying something new, I intentionally avoid over-researching so we can take it all in together. With that spirit, I’m happy to share that Houston Symphony presents Oh What Fun! A Holiday Concert for Kids turned out to be the perfect first symphony experience.

A unique way to engage

From the moment we arrived at Jones Hall, the atmosphere felt joyful and welcoming. The hot cocoa station was a clear crowd favorite, while beautiful a cappella harmonies from students at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts filled the air. Dressed in Renaissance attire, they greeted families with warmth and wonder, instantly setting the tone for a special day.

As we approached the grand lobby, the space came alive. Playful chatter echoed between glass staircases, live music from orchestra ensembles drifted through the room, and families (many in coordinated holiday outfits) paused for hugs and photo ops. Bright red carpeting and layered balconies inspired curiosity and calm all at once. Walking in for the first time felt like arriving, and sharing that moment with my son warmed my heart.

So many activities to choose from!

He couldn’t decide where to go first. Everywhere he looked, there were things to touch, explore, talk about, and investigate; and for once, I knew I was in good hands. The Symphony had created an experience that didn’t require me to be the entertainment or respond to the familiar refrain of “I’m bored.”

The second floor was a joyful flurry of activity: letters to and photos with Santa, coloring stations, student performers, and an instrument petting zoo. Just as thoughtfully, there were designated sensory-inclusive spaces designed for busy bodies like mine—kids who need to talk, wiggle, and move while still feeling welcomed.

Then came the gentle blinking of the lights; a subtle cue that it was time to wrap up activities and head to our seats. My son dashed up the stairs, intrigued by the darkened auditorium ahead. We settled in just in time to witness those final moments of tuning, when musicians quietly prepare and the room hums with anticipation.

Oh! What a concert... Thank you Houston Symphony :)

Once the concert began, the space transformed into something communal and joyful. It felt less like a formal performance and more like one big sing-along. As if we were all carolers together, the set list was designed with everyone in mind.

Children who had never met gathered along the balcony stairs, standing shoulder to shoulder, pointing excitedly, exchanging wide-eyed looks, giggles, and laughter. They inched closer for a better view, captivated by sparkly instruments, charming precision, and bold harmonies. Parents exchanged knowing smiles as we swayed together, incredibly grateful to be there.

What Families Can Expect

Houston Symphony’s family concerts are designed to feel inviting rather than intimidating. Performances in the PNC Family Series feature shorter run times, engaging visuals, and a relaxed environment where children are encouraged to experience music in their own way. You’ll see plenty of families, which makes it easier to breathe if kids whisper, react, or move along with the music.

Why It’s Worth the Drive

I believe the Houston Symphony’s Holiday Concert Series isn’t designed just for kids, it’s designed for special memories. The kind parents intentionally create because our own childhood moments, planted decades ago, still surface this time of year.

There are so many things we can’t control. But giving children the gift of connection, joy, creativity, play, and beautiful music? That’s priceless. It’s a worthy investment—and one the Houston Symphony clearly understands is worth protecting.

Parenting Tips for First-Time Symphony Visits

  • Talk ahead of time about what your child will see: real instruments, many musicians, and a conductor guiding the performance
  • Arrive early to enjoy pre-concert activities and settle in
  • Choose aisle seating when possible for quick breaks
  • Let go of perfect behavior—this experience is about exposure and curiosity
  • At this special kids series, clapping, singing, and gentle movement are welcome
