Volunteer as a Family in Houston!

A Great Teaching Opportunity for Your Children While Volunteering as a Family

By Melissa Martinez, Macaroni KID Downtown Houston September 12, 2024

One thing I love about Houston is for as long as I’ve been here, the people have been pleasant and helpful and that’s such a needed vibe in our current state of the world at large. So it got me thinking, how could I be more giving and could I get into some volunteer work with my son? At the moment, I just volunteer with his school’s Parent Teacher Organization, but what else? We can always do more.  So I did some digging and selected the types of causes that could work well specifically for family volunteering.

When I searched “Volunteer Day”, the internet kinda’ did me wrong with the date. Turns out National Volunteer Day was a couple of weeks ago according to one source, other sources will say International Volunteer Day is in December and then there's National Volunteer Month and Week taking place in April; But it’s never too late, or too early, and always a good time to be of service. We gotta teach these kids early to care about their neighbor, care about their environment and everything else in between.

Community/Environment

BUFFALO BAYOU PARK

Following the meal, volunteers prepare leftover food and tidy up the kitchen/dining room. Hospitality Volunteers complete an online application and background check. Upon approval, volunteers attend an in-person tour and training for their role. Hospitality Volunteers must be at least 18 years old (15 years old if accompanied by a legal guardian).

URBAN HARVEST

The mission of Urban Harvest is to be a catalyst in transforming food accessibility in Greater Houston. They aim to achieve this by fostering strong partnerships with local farmers and gardeners, operating vibrant Farmers Markets, initiating mobile markets, and providing comprehensive garden education.

Volunteers are invited to help stuff packets, prepare Grow Kits and to work in the gardens. Kids younger than 13 who want to volunteer can do so as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
