Houston's Day of the Dead Celebrations

This Weekend's Dia de los Muertos Events Around the City

Houston is big on celebrating Day of the Dead. Such a time honored annual tradition in which altars (ofrendas) are set up adorned with photos of loved ones who have passed, laced with marigolds (cempasuchil) and featuring favorite items of deceased loved ones, bread (pan de muertos), drinks, trinkets and so much more to memorialize deceased families, friends and pets. This year, Dia de los Muertos falls on a Saturday and Houston has some annual festivities and cool events happening to honor this family celebration of remembrance.

In honor of all of the pets who have touched our lives and held special places in our hearts, we invite our community to join us for this special annual event.  Our courtyard is transformed from a garden to a beautiful ofrenda space, filled with traditional dia de los muertos symbols, decor, and beautiful music. Community members, shelter staff, and volunteers adorn the ofrenda with photos of departed pets, mementos, toys, and treats as the altar grows throughout the evening.
