๐บ๐ธ Honor Our Veterans This November 11th ๐บ๐ธ
Veterans Day stands as a tribute to all who have served in America's armed forces. This significant date marks the 1918 Armistice with Germany, which effectively ended World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Originally called Armistice Day, it was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 following efforts by veterans' organizations.
Here are meaningful ways your family can celebrate and remember veterans in Houston or at home on this commemorative day.
At Home:
- Join The Veterans Day Moment of Silence at 1:11pm on 11/11
- Help children research and learn about a family member who served
- If there are family members or friends who served, share their stories and photos with your children
In Your Community:
- Attend Houston Veterans Day ceremonies/events or parades
- Visit a veterans' memorial or military museum
- Bring flowers or flags to a veterans' cemetery
- Support veteran-owned businesses
Show Direct Support:
- Visit veterans at VA facilities (call ahead) or mail them your thank you's
- Volunteer with veterans' organizations
- Create care packages for deployed service members
Whether you have veterans in your family or simply wish to thank your local heroes, these gestures help ensure their service and sacrifice are remembered and kids learn about the importance of veterans to our country.
TO ALL VETERANS: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SACRIFICE ๐บ๐ธ

1. Attend Houston's Veterans Day celebrations
HOUSTON SALUTES AMERICAN HEROES VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION
10am ceremony
๐ City Hall
AMERICAN HEROES PARADE
11:30am
๐ Beginning at Dallas and Bagby, proceeding east on Dallas, north on Louisiana, west on Walker, south on Smith, west on Lamar, ending on Lamar at Bagby.
3rd ANNUAL VETERANS DAY CEREMONY
1pm
๐ Buffalo Soldiers National Museum
2. Fly a flag
Put your American flag out on Veterans Day and fly it for all to see. This is a day of celebration, not mourning, so your flag should not be flown at half mast. To get your youngest ones involved, decorate for the day by putting small flags into the ground and line your sidewalk.
4. Write a thank you note
Sit down with your child to make a card or write a letter for a veteran you know. Getting a card in the mail brightens everyone's day. Don't know a veteran? Drop cards off at your local VA Hospital or veterans home if allowed, or team up with Operation Gratitude to write letters to those serving. Once registered, they will email you a letter-writing guide, printable coloring sheets for children, and instructions for shipping the letters to them for distribution.
You can also inquire with your local home care businesses, such as HomeWell Care Services, who serve Veteran clients throughout Greater Houston and can possibly facilitate thank you's being sent to their clients homes.
Ofcourse, this is a short list of ideas and there's so much more to do. If you and your family have an awesome tradition or ways that you celebrate the Veterans in your life, we'd love to hear about!
