We’re in the year of the Snake and I never knew too much about Lunar New Year, but Houston has my attention on it. One of the things I love about this city is there’s so many cultures celebrated and experienced, and I’m looking forward to attending some of the events in celebration of this annual tradition.
Although Lunar New Year does not accurately describe the meaning behind one of the most celebrated of New Year celebrations, it takes place on the first new moon of the new year. What it’s actually based on is a lunisolar calendar (lunar AND solar) based on the moon phase and the solar year. We are expecting the first new moon on January 29 at 7:36am.
Fun fact, Vietnam and Korea are who popularized calling the occasion “Lunar New Year”; For people who are not of Chinese descent, it’s also popularly called Chinese New Year.
